Difference between Australian and American separation of powers...?

In Australia, our executive branch of government is interlinked with our legislative (law making) section of governance. I was wondering how the seperation of powers system works in the US, considering that the executive is not linked with the legislative. What are the responsibilities of the US executive and who makes up the executive?
